Cold Lake Casino

Bold design that tells the story of a connection to the landscape.

The intersection of Culture and Modern Design

This project involved expanding the existing Cold Lake Casino, requiring a careful balance of modernizing the space while seamlessly integrating the new addition with the original design. The new design was carefully crafted to honour the Denae people and their land, while avoiding direct associations with spiritual or cultural symbols. Instead, we focused on representing their heritage through natural forms and materials such as mountain-like millwork features, the use of the circle (a symbol of importance in Denae culture), Denae flowers, triangle shapes, and organic finishes like wood and feature lighting that evokes a woven material. This approach allowed us to celebrate their culture in a respectful, subtle way, rooted in the natural landscape.

As the interior designer under my principal design lead, I contributed to the creative direction, material selection, and 3D rendering for the Cold Lake Casino, focusing on seamlessly integrating the new addition with the existing casino building. My role involved creative design, 3D rendering, collaborating on physical finish selections, and reviewing and marking up construction drawings.

Renders

These 3D renders, created in SketchUp and Enscape, showcase the Cold Lake Casino’s design, highlighting key architectural features, natural forms, and cultural elements that honor the Denae people’s heritage. They offer a glimpse of the space’s seamless connection to the landscape and its thoughtful material choices.
